That's a valid point. The majority of people came in through use of ledger, coldcard and other hardware devices through random ads/news and mostly bought into the hype and still hold their coins on these devices. I remember when i first owned Bitcoin i spent some good amount on a store bought Ledger Nano in 2014 and continued holding until 2021 when i delved deeper to understand exactly how Bitcoin works. I suspect many other still hold their coins on such devices.

+It would be impressive to see in long term another "similar" issuue that could involve a big thirdparty (it seems most of big companies are relying to in hardware for generating keys) or just another producer of address in a largescale.
+Even with any other big advancement (AI? Quantum? whatelse?) basically this should not change the math behind btc and the complexity to guess a private key in a space of 2^256.

+the same blockchain that appears "weak" since has been "breaked" by hackers.... it's actually used by them for storage of the coins!
+there is a dicotomy in what happens... and despite a common user would think that selling is the best choice due "unsecurity", it's absolutely the opposite.
+And as a general rule, bitcoin is just making what has been designed for.
+I started to use this technology few months before 2014 and I can assure that any guidance or explanation would never requires to rely on third party hardware.

+This coldcard issue will remain a topic of fresh debate for a long time as a reminder and a lesson and a point to develop and upgrade upon because it is such incidents that makes Bitcoin standout and stronger and self custody more aware and more secure to use that traditional banking.
+as I see it, the coldcard incident should serve as a lesson and a wake up call for the entire hw industry, but I don't think it makes Bitcoin standout and stronger. on the contrary, this incident is making more people question hardware wallet and the potential risk of digital asset.
+this has nothing to do with bank. in fact, the incident is even shaking confidence in self custody. iam concerned that more and more investors will choose etf over self custody going forward.

+I think I understand why airgapped wallet is way better for self custody that others and if this is an issue from the company, that is, if this coldcard issue is from the company, there would be some kind of compensation to customers who lost and sm sure sure this would make coldcard come back stronger or reinvent itself to suit self custody demands in the future.
+as far as I know, coinkite has publicly apologized and accepted responsibility, but it has not made any concrete commitment to provide financial compensation.

+This can make everyone more vigilant should even with the frills of self custody or whatever it is in the end when there is a bug that can be infiltrated then the seed that is kept safe will not be released from hacking in the end.
+This is a bit of a concern, but on the other hand, realizing that the system is 100 percent secure is not entirely true. Although we know that security is getting more and more improved but on the one hand there will always be irresponsible people trying to damage this so we are still confident about the security of bitcoin but not with hardware or software that can appear at any time like this Coldcard case.
+In the end for now we should realize that self-custody is not entirely safe but this only minimizes the worst possibility of happening.

Post by: SaddamoftheWest on August 03, 2026, 03:47:18 PM
The coldcard hack will be one of the most significant events in the history of Bitcoin and self custody. Right now, there is a full on assault on self custody. This attack is not coordinated, but driven by a large group of self interested individuals who are trying to make a name for themselves.
It's a revolution in the same way that Peter Turchins theory of elite overproduction creates a class of individuals who are trying to move up in the value chain but there is no place for them in the system. Some have companies, some just want the social media clout, others are writing books.... What unifies this group is that they are latecomers(mostly post 2020, some 2017) ambitious and can smell blood in the waters of the early Bitcoiners, influencers, podcasters.....
To name some of them, Britishhodl, Gary Cardone, Sam,....you can find them all over Twitter and spaces on full assault.
You can hear an example of their assault on self custody now on spaces:
    https://x.com/i/spaces/1mxPaaMvBvDKN
Edit: Oh, why it will change Bitcoin: the majority of Bitcoiners now are nothing like the early Bitcoiners. They mostly came here for the number goes up, gamble, trade, currency debasement,....They do not give a fuck about self custody or running nodes.

I don't agree with that. To begin with, he is not breaking any rule by starting this thread because, he is giving a different angle. Whats more, the other thread is already on page 14, and a message like the one the OP wants to get across would probably get lost there whereas this thread might attract attention.
I dont know to what extent what he says is true, but its clear that this will mark a turning point, and its a clear attack on the be your own bank movement.
    Keep the thread open, OP.

Hasn't that been a thing for at least a few years? It didn't happen overnight a few days ago, did it? But that's when the Coldcard hack happened...
Your thread is called "The coldcard hack will change Bitcoin" yet you haven't provided any argument for why it will.
Please elaborate your point further. From what I see, people who cared about the self-custody will only care more. People who didn't, most likely will just keep holding on CEXs or whatever they do these days. Where's the change?

+Whether it brings a revolution or not, but one thing is for sure, for the time being, people won't be able to trust hardware wallet manufacturers, and many will probably stop using them for the short run. Some will start renewing their wallets and seed phrases and apply passphrases which should have been done at the beginning, but others might stop using hardware wallets completely for the time being.
+Before anything changed technically, people will still use what are available now. What can be changed even immediately is creating a new wallet, with a passphrase, and moving their bitcoins from current wallets without passphrase to a new wallet with passphrase.
+Not all people will change their practice, and it's similar to how they still ignore many security advice, and continue using custodial wallets, centralized exchanges, even with weak wallet passwords, weak account passwords.

This is a lesson for others, instead of shaming each other and do competition with some scrappy features that people don't need. +Hack data is easier to collect on the CEX side, usually major news. It is harder on the self-custody side, where hacks, lost coins, etc are often not reported.

The thread gained a post arguing that the incident should prompt safer wallet design and criticizing exchange custody messaging.

"From what I see, people who cared about the self-custody will only care more." I strongly disagree . Those who care about self custody and any new people joining the space now have a new wannabe elites who aim to establish themselves as leaders and destroy the old narratives.
"Where's the change?" Dude, look around. We are in the dark ages in the West. Many have not fully grasped it yet, some are coming around to the reality, and they are trying to make as much money as they can while they can. If it means going on a full assault on self custody, Cypherpunks, older established companies,...They will do it and are doing it now( listen to that speace). A lot of them washed up here from trad fi and hate the fact that others who were early got rich.
     ThIs is just getting started.

This will pass though! It's just temporary drama where people talk about it a lot for a little while before they move on to the next thing. As I said, this won't change a thing.
You are wrong on this. This will not be allowed to pass, as there is an immiserated wannabe elites who entered this industry late, can see all the wealth that's around, and want a slice.

I don't think the coldcard hack will have any effect on Bitcoin whatsoever.  Most people don't use hardware wallets and the ones that do don't use coldcards (they were ugly as sin).  This is unfortunately a hack that hurt a very small segment of the community and while they're making a lot of noise now, it will be completely forgotten about before the end of the year.
The thing that I'm concerned about is the introduction to my vocabulary of the phrase 'retirement attack' which has me looking at things in a different light now.  I'm not sure I want access to anyone else's funds anymore.

+I was looking through public reactions to the Coldcard hack since yesterday, and I think youre right. I couldnt agree more with what you said.
+I was expecting some attack from exchanges but I wasn't seeing them until I came came across some posts of CZ, the industry Douchebag trying to make some impressions and he didn't disappoint with his useless opinions. This was what he wrote:
    +Quote
+It is statistically safer to store coins on exchanges than to self custody. 👇
    +A few thoughts:
+Assuming the data is correct, my impression is Willy has always been a strong supporter for self custody.
+Hack data is easier to collect on the CEX side, usually major news. It is harder on the self-custody side, where hacks, lost coins, etc are often not reported.
+I'm not sure if he has a memory loss because he claimed to be here since 2013, the biggest Bitcoin exchange heist that is still not been recovered till date was one of the biggest Bitcoin hack, there are other couple of centralized exchanges that lose Bitcoin, what was stolen to Coldcard is just a tiny fraction of what was stolen and he has the effrontery to says this this on tweets, he is what you said they are doing, to demoralize self custody.
+People need to know that there are algorithm to safety and if you compromised any step, there are consequences to it. This is not Bitcoin fault, not holders negligence but this is company fault. This is a lesson for others, instead of shaming each other and do competition with some scrappy features that people don't need. If they focus on feature that will make wallet safer, it's for everyone good.

I think that sometimes conversations like this are more about recovery way and less about how wallets are created. Changing the backup format is not a real solution if creation process is damaged.
More important lesson, to me, is that users should not take anything for granted, simply because it is popular. Separate checks, open code and proper inspections are just as important as the recovery process itself.

Those hacks happen for many times and its sad to see that despite of those big hacking issue many people still choose convenience over security.
Lots of newbies still trust those CEX for thinking that they only put the amount which they can afford to lose, also they are afraid to lose their keys. But regret later on those decision they have done once hacking issues exist and their balances got wiped out.

Title: The coldcard hack will change Bitcoin, it's a revolution.

Two new posts were added to the thread: MusaMohamed arguing most holders will not change their security practice despite the attack, and pooya87 replying that the hack will not change how people store funds and that seed phrases provide the same 128 bits of security as a private key.

Whether it brings a revolution or not, but one thing is for sure, for the time being, people won't be able to trust hardware wallet manufacturers, and many will probably stop using them for the short run. Some will start renewing their wallets and seed phrases and apply passphrases which should have been done at the beginning, but others might stop using hardware wallets completely for the time being. Honestly, this is too heartbreaking to see. People have lost all their money that they have saved working for so many years, imagine working for 12 to 15 years, making money, and then investing that money in an asset, and then getting your wallet compromised, especially when you have always been told to use a hardware wallet because they are the safest.
So many people would rather use a centralized exchange such as Binance to keep their assets than using a hardware wallet for now, because at least Binance says that the funds of their users are SAFU with them and if anything happens, they will be responsible unless individual accounts are compromised from user's ends and not because of the exchange or its security.
This is the only revolution this attack is going to bring in this industry, and it's not a good one.

+Some or many people will think if they choose and use a good wallets with enough dice rolls for 128 bits of entropy, they will no longer need to use a passphrase. This is similar to security things about risk of custodial wallets and weak passwords.
+Generally, there are few people will change while the majority will not change.

+The Coldcard hack will change the way people store funds. Unhackable private keys instead of silly seeds.
    +No it won't.
+It's like centralized exchanges. As long as they've existed, which is pretty much from the second year I think, they have been getting hacked. Some of them massive hacks (eg. Mt Gox) and yet people are still using them to this day instead of moving on to decentralized exchanges.
+P.S. Seed phrases provide as much security as a private key (128 bits).
