TL;DR: What will we, as a self-custody community, expect from cold storage vendors? We need a checklist or wishlist of minimum features that we expect from any or all vendors.  So no more "trust" us or influencer reviews - meet our minimum first.  Then we can talk about features beyond that.

I almost switched to a ColdCard a couple of months ago.  But circumstances, including a terrible response from their support, made me hold off a little.  And for those that did lose their stash it really pains me for your situation.  I hope this doesn't stop you from stacking again.  If it were me, I would take some time, do some more research on safety and probably start again with as much as I could afford.

But as a community of self-custodians - we should also send a message to vendors.  What should we expect other that flashy marketing, like "super-secure" chips and "future-proof your wealth"? 

I need to replace an old Nano S, and looking at the field of devices today, doesn't give me a high trust satisfaction.  I feel like I'm still rolling the dice (pun intended) with any vendor.  Because there is no way to verify.

BTW - I am no expert at any of this, but a concerned hodler and citizen.  Some or most of my terminology below might be a little off.

What should I expect from a new wallet?  I'll start the list off, hopefully you all can help me add more specifics:

1. Dice rolls or entropy proof.  Goes without saying now.  The option to provide your own entropy or dice rolls either with dice or something like Seedsigner.  Maybe they provide physically separate products that "talk" to each other.  Not all cold wallets accept the entropy from SeedSigner.

2. Open source; though this won't guarantee safety, but nice to know it's available.  Though I did review SeedSigner code, I wouldn't spot a problem unless I really dig in.

3. Air-gapped or if Bluetooth, the ability to control on/off of transmission with an indicator that shows it is off or on.

4. Single or Multi signature capability

5. BIP39 or SLIP39 (though what I understand is that SLIP39 is Trezor only?)

6. Lifecycle for product launch and sunset.  How long will it be supported?

7. Updatable firmware - I don't know if this is critical or possible in some cases.

8. Stealth?  Trezor shape stands out, Coldcard I could get away with calling it a calculator if asked, Ledger Nana (S/X) just a usb drive.

9. Protocols - if the wallet does have Bluetooth capability, what protocol is it using? Trezor publishes a guide I believe?

I'm sure there's more, but I'm not sure what is minimum?  What say you?
